Les Miserables at Orpheum Theatre San Francisco

Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the original musical screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (previously in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the matching title, Les Mis was transformed into a theater play performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that time period.

Following a very short run in Paris, France, there was obviously overwhelming support to make an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and decided to write an English interpretation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the translated songs. The English version of Les Misérables at first debuted with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its financial success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it quickly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, London theatre's top location, and remained there for 19 years. The West End play then moved once more to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and maintains its shows up until today. Adding together all its tours since its creation four decades ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is actually the longest-running stage play in the entire world.

With almost 4 decades in West End alone and not even listing its shows in other countries, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is undeniable that Les Misérables perseveres and is unsurpassed in the eyes of the play's attendees. The narrative and the epic musical score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the revealed heart beneath the surface of each character and act performed. Les Mis has become so famous that the show has been converted to movies repeatedly and received very positively even on another medium.
