You’re invited to the BIGGEST birthday bash in the history of American musical theater! On June 5–29, 2024, Company: A Musical Comedy will take over San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre for multiple showings of last year’s most-awarded Broadway phenomenon.
After its sold-out series of Broadway and West End engagements, the gender-swapped revival of Sondheim’s trend-setting classic breaks out a highly anticipated tour for the 2023-2024 season. The first round of shows–commencing in New York–will launch in the second week of October, with 25 cities en route across North America.
Where are you supposed to be when you hit 35? Bobbie’s not quite sure because–as disappointing as it is–wisdom doesn’t necessarily come with age. Life as a bachelorette has plenty of pros, but she does wonder. Should she settle down as well? Her friends think so, but what do they know? Two of them are struggling to keep their marriage alive via jiu-jitsu. Embark on a soul-searching ride through 21st-century New York with the barely contained madness of Bobbie and her friends as they peek behind the doors of single and married life, searching for the ever-elusive answers to questions they probably should’ve asked sooner.
Clocking in at about 2 hours and 45 minutes (plus an intermission), Company utilizes an interrelated train of vignettes over the standard linear narrative of most plays. The original was a pioneering force that tackled the contemporary phases of romance, from dating to marriage to divorce. This latest edition–faithful to the first–reexamines all its themes and messages through the eyes of modern-day millennials.

Produced by Elliott & Harper Productions, Work Light Productions, and Catherine Schreiber, the North American tour will also showcase three-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott at the helm, with George Furth’s iconic book reconceptualized. “It’s full of love, the piece. And yet it’s also full of irony and complications of love and complications of being in a couple and the complications of being single… It’s complex, it’s complicated, and it’s juicy. There’s a lot to it. There are so many different ways of looking at love and being in love and expressing love,” director Elliot remarks about what she learned from the show’s story.
The former understudy finally catches her big break: Britney Coleman is Bobbie, baby! This rising star began her on-stage career as early as third grade, playing Mary Lennox in a production of The Secret Garden. Now based in NYC, Coleman has been taking Broadway by storm with appearances in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Tootsie, and Glenn Close’s Sunset Boulevard revival. She currently stars as the ghastly Barbara Maitland in the Beetlejuice national tour.

Company’s 2021 Broadway revival was an unrelenting juggernaut during last year’s award season. It grabbed a total of 14 wins out of 23 nominations. Among these are Best Revival, Best Direction, and Best Scenic Design from the Tony Awards. It also clinched awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical from the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle committees.
The scintillating classic’s penchant for acclaim, however, isn’t a recent development. In fact, the comedy traces its award-winning history back to the original 1970 production. It performed over 700 shows and was nominated for 14 Tony Awards–a record-setter at the time–winning 6, including one for Best Musical. It also completed a 5-category sweep at the Drama Desk Awards, with awards for Outstanding Book, Music, and Lyrics at the forefront.
