& Juliet at Orpheum Theatre San Francisco

Moving away from the previous known story of Romeo & Juliet which debuted on stage around forty decades earlier, fans have discerned the stark alterations that had been implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more recent show based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original narrative is centered around the tragic story that comes about because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead embraces a more positive outlook by focusing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such harrowing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who journey to Paris to come to realize their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s account and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while welcoming new and equally strong women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that express the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading cast throughout the show. Even the costumes worn by the musical’s women give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the new show and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This July’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to California, where Orpheum Theatre of San Francisco is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Wednesday 16th July 2025. Known in the entire California area by locals as the top venue for staged musical's, Orpheum Theatre is a large theater with plenty of seating capacity while showing off the most magnificent architecture both inside and outside the venue.
