In 1980, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the very first stage screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (initially in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the matching name, Les Mis was transformed into a live stage adaptation as a fully lyricized play, which was monumental in that decade.
After a very short run in France, there was obviously great clamor to create an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the musical score, he was so inspired and announced he was going to write an English adaptation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new lyrics. The English version of the musical initially performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, it unsurprisingly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and superior location, and was performed for close to two decades. The West End play then relocated one more time to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. Adding together all its tours since its creation four decades ago, Les Misérables is actually the longest-running stage play of all time.
With almost 40 years in London alone and not even counting its productions in international locations, including and definitely not limited to its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is with certainty that Les Misérables continues to be unsurpassed in the eyes of the show's fanbase. The storyline and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the apparent emotion behind each song and act presented. The musical has become so critically-acclaimed that it has been converted to movies repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on a different platform.
