Les Miserables at Orpheum Theatre San Francisco

Occurring specifically in the period concurrent with the 1832 French rebellion in France, the musical is the tale of Jean Valjean, a local of France who was pronounced guilty for almost two decades as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and seeks a new life free from the law; he then takes on a brand new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean back to prison.

Transpiring over a span of almost two decades covered by its two acts, Valjean becomes intertwined by accidental means with numerous key figures throughout the musical – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory laborers who is the mother of an illegitimate child; Cosette is the foster baby of Monsieur Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s infant; Marius, a young local fighting for the insurgency and the love interest of Cosette. Other roles shown in Les Misérables are the Thénardiers, abusive innkeepers who think only of themselves and are engrossed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their child, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the insurgency specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning street urchin, and the opposition’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.

This diverse group of characters entangled by serendipity and their personal stories are presented beautifully on stage, not just with its 1800s French-inspired costume and prop creations, but distinctly with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from start to finish. With famous numbers like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as anthems of its amazing song list, the heart-stopping show is able to portray the real and unmasked personalities hidden deep in each character that plays out beautifully in each performance.

The musical's next stage will be in the exemplary Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, running for a limited period on Sunday 28th September 2025.
