In 2013, never did people realize that a wholesome version of “The Snow Queen” would capture hearts and have bop songs. The phenomenon that is “Frozen” is embedded in everyone’s mind since it took the world in a warm embrace (ironically) since its release. “Let It Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” “Love is an Open Door,” and many tunes are unforgettable in the movie. Because of the film’s success, a stage adaptation came a few years later. As expected, it is as brilliant as its movie counterpart, bringing the magic of the animations to reality. San Francisco’s holiday seasons will start a few weeks earlier as Frozen: The Musical will come this fall.

“The show has undeniable “dazzle and wit,” and the expensively refurbished Drury Lane is a “ravishing” home for it.” – London Evening Standard

“This is a show every bit as magical as the animation, packed with visual thrills and gorgeous choreography (by Rob Ashford) alongside signature ballads that gain greater power in their live incarnation. It is big on spectacle yet never loses control with special effects that yield some dazzling coups de theatre.” – The Guardian

“Warmth and humor pervade Frozen, breathing theatrical life into a POP CULTURE PHENOMENON about the enduring power of love.” – Variety

Similar to the film, the musical chronicles the story of sisters Elsa and Anna. The difference is that the musical is mature and more profound, losing some of the whimsical nature of the original. However, it still is a show for the family and will be enjoyed by children. In addition, Elsa and Anna’s relationship is accentuated.

Early developments of the musical started in 2014. Disney Theatrical Productions produced the musical with the aim of making a spectacular version that will follow the footsteps of the animated movie. Its stellar production team included the original songwriters, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Jennifer Lee, who wrote the film’s script, also came back. Director Alex Timbers, choreographer Peter Darling, and music supervisor Stephen Oremus worked together on the project.

Before it came out on Broadway, a tryout was held in Denver at the Buell Theatre. After the pre-run, 30% of the music is rewritten to suit a more adult audience and delved into a “deeper dive into the princesses’ [Elsa] psyches.”

The Broadway run started on March 22, 2018, at the St. James Theatre. The show highlighted the high-tech staging of the show, which showcased lighting effects for Elsa’s snow power, and costumes for the non-human characters such as Olaf and Sven. The Broadway production stayed for 26 previews and 825 performances. It was only halted during the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show did not reopen after Broadway resumed live performances.

As Broadway closed, the West End production opened. Theatre Royal in London premiered it on September 8, 2021. The production will continue up to 2023.
