About Suffs
“From the playful ‘Let Mother Vote’ to the defiant ‘Finish the Fight,’ Taub’s score strikes a balance between historical authenticity and modern musical flair.” – Variety
Taking you all the way back to 1910, Suffs is the story of the American women’s suffrage movement. Exploring their triumphs and failures, the friendships, heartbreaks, and conflicts, and the 10-year struggle against racial, generational, and class divides. Finally, culminating in the massive success that is the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.
Suffs took home two 2024 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, both for Shaina Taub. The musical also received the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical.
The show runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes one intermission. It is recommended for ages 10 and up due to its historical themes and complex subject; no children under 5 are allowed.

‘Suffs’ Review: Broadway Musical About Women’s Fight for the Vote Gets Thrilling and Entertaining Musicalization
A musical that captures the sweep of history in all its complexities without sacrifice of character or credibility is no easy feat.
By Frank Rizzo for Variety
“‘Suffs,’ the stirring and inspiring new musical about the women’s suffrage movement that won the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, brings its invigorating tale to Broadway with a singular vision and a collective collaboration that is smart, entertaining, and profoundly moving. Written, composed, and starring Shaina Taub as Alice Paul — one of the many firebrand activists who fought for women’s equality at the ballot box — this musical doesn’t shy away from the messiness and complexities of the movement and its many players. It’s a history lesson that doesn’t feel like one, thanks to its inventive storytelling, musical richness, and emotional engagement, fueled by the vigor of brilliant outsiders demanding their place not only in history but on Broadway.
Taub’s score is a vibrant tapestry, weaving together styles that range from Tin Pan Alley to soaring anthems, with moments of recitative (think rap-like exchanges) that give the dialogue a rhythmic pulse. Her ‘I Want’ song for Alice Paul, ‘Finish the Fight,’ is a standout, capturing the character’s relentless drive with a melody that’s both catchy and empowering. The ensemble numbers, like ‘The March,’ are electric, conveying the urgency and unity of the movement while showcasing the diverse voices of the cast. Each performer shines, from Nikki M. James’ poignant Ida B. Wells to Jenn Colella’s commanding Carrie Chapman Catt, bringing depth to the historical figures who clashed and collaborated in their quest for justice.
Director Leigh Silverman keeps the pacing brisk and the staging dynamic, using Mimi Lien’s versatile set — a blend of period elegance and modernist simplicity — to evoke both the grandeur of the fight and the intimacy of personal struggles. The choreography by Mayte Natalio adds a visceral energy, particularly in the protest scenes, which pulse with the defiance of the era. Taub’s book doesn’t gloss over the movement’s flaws, including its racial tensions and strategic divides, making the story feel urgent and relevant to today’s audiences.
What makes ‘Suffs’ particularly remarkable is its ability to balance education with entertainment. It illuminates lesser-known figures like Mary Church Terrell and Ruza Wenclawska while giving due reverence to icons like Susan B. Anthony. The musical’s emotional core lies in its portrayal of sisterhood — imperfect, fractious, but ultimately unifying. By the time the cast delivers the rousing finale, ‘Keep Marching,’ you’re not just cheering for the characters but for the progress they represent. ‘Suffs’ is a triumphant addition to Broadway, proving that stories of women’s resilience can be both historically rigorous and theatrically thrilling.”
The Cast and Creative
“The show’s ensemble-based approach reflects the collective spirit of activism, making it feel less like a star vehicle and more like a movement brought to life.” – The Washington Post
The 2025 tour will feature Monica Tulia Ramirez (Real Women Have Curves) reprising her Broadway role as Inez Milholland and Jenny Ashman (Come From Away) playing President Woodrow Wilson. The ensemble will include the new, emerging talents Victoria Pekel (Yale graduate) and Abigail Aziz (University of Michigan BFA).
With the book, music, and lyrics all written by the huge talent Shaina Taub, who then took home two Tonys for the show in 2024, you know it’s got a fantastic backing. Plus Suffs was directed by Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman, who was nominated for the direction in this show, choreography by Mayte Natalio (How to Dance in Ohio), music supervision by Andrea Grody (The Band’s Visit), and costume design by Oscar and Tony Award winner Paul Tazewell (Hamilton).
