Fanny Brice's journey from being a delicate, uninteresting, stage-shy young girl to becoming a national star is recounted in the production, Funny Girl. It is based on the happenings in her life that transpired just before, during, and after World War I. Her narrative starts in her early years in the Lower East Side of New York City, where the young teenager clowns her way through burlesque and vaudeville while hoping to succeed despite being discouraged by her family and friends who say she is not beautiful enough to be a star on stage. It also tells the story of her relationship with Nick Arnstein, a charming local whose attraction Fanny finds desirable, as well as the eventual failure of their marriage.
